The Basil (Sweet) plant (Ocimum basilicum), is a tender, annual herb with pink toned or greenish white flowers. The herb is native to tropical Asia and Africa and is cultivated widely now throughout Europe.The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flowering tops. The steam distillation produces a yellow or pale green oil with a slightly strong, yet sweet and herbaceous aroma with a somewhat camphorous bite.
Basil is widely used in Far Eastern medicine especially in the Ayurvedic tradition. It can be beneficial for supporting respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, colds and cough. It can improve blood circulation, and support the digestive system; kidney ailments and provide relief for rheumatic pain. Basil is an excellent aromatic nerve tonic; helping to clear the head, provide mental strength and clarity,and helping to relieve anxiety, depression, nervous tension, insomnia, and fatigue.
Basil blends well with Lavender, Lemon, Niaouli, Frankincense, Oregano, Geranium, Tea Tree, Clary Sage and a host of other oils. Basil should not be used in aromatherapy, (avoid use in baths and showers). Can cause some skin irritation. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
