Elemi (Canarium luzonicum) comes from a tropical tree that yields a green resin with a pungent odor. Although it is called a gum, it is almost entirely made up of resin and essential oil. The tree is native to the Philippine and Molucca Islands and cultivated there. Distillation of the oil takes place at the source. The oil is steam distilled from the gum. It produces a colorless to pale yellow liquid and has a light, fresh, balsamic spicy, lemony aroma. Elemi was one of the aromatics used by ancient Egyptians for embalming purposes, and can be used to support skin tone and texture, calming the mind, can promote wound healing, and provide support for the respiratory system. If you like using frankincense or myrrh, you will probably like Elemi. It blends well with Rosemary, Lavender, Myrrh, Frankincense, Lavandin, Sage, Cinnamon, Juniper, and other oils. Elemi is non-toxic, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing.
