Mandarin (Green) (Citrus reticulata) comes from a small, fragrant evergreen tree bearing fleshy fruit. It is native to southern China and the Far East, but now the United States is its largest producer. The tangerine is larger than the mandarin, but comes from the same tree. The tangerine oil comes from fruit harvested in November and Mandarin oil is from the same fruit, but left on the tree until February.

Green Mandarin oil has a more pronounced yellow-orange to yellow-greenish color, and is obtained from the green fruit rind. The oil can be obtained either through cold-pressing of the rind, or steam distillation of the whole ripe fruit. Mandarin oil is produced mainly in Italy. The oil has an uplifting, intensely sweet, citrusy fragrance.

Mandarin oil is said to help calm the nervous system; support circulation in muscles and joints, help clear congested and oily skin, and can help provide relief for intestinal problems and the digestive system. It blends well with Aniseed, Rosemary, Black pepper, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Cypress, Dill, Frankincense, Neroli, Lavender, Helichrysum, Nutmeg, Ginger, Jasmine, and other essential oils. Mandarin oil is non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritant but can be phototoxic; avoid exposing skin to direct sunlight for 12 hours after use.
