Peru Balsam (Myroxylon balsamum var. pereirae) is native to Central America. The Peru Balsam is an evergreen tree that grows up to 120 feet tall with gorgeous fragrant flowers. The tree is native to Central America and production is done in San Salvador. Every part of the tree contains a resinous sap including the fruits. The balsam is obtained from the exposed deep cuts made in the trunk after the bark has been stripped. The crude balsam of the tree is put through steam distillation to extract the essential oil, producing a yellowish to amber colored viscous liquid oil with a deep, rich woody, and vanilla aroma. (A lesser quality oil is also made by steam distilling the wood chippings).

Peru Balsam supports skin care concerns like eczema, dry - chapped skin, rashes and sores. It is also helps increase circulation to the muscles and joints providing warming comfort to the area. It is soothing to the mind, calms nervous tension, and provides beneficial support to the respiratory and immune systems.

It blends well with Ylang ylang, Sandalwood, Rose, Petitgrain, Patchouli, Niaouli, Neroli,Cypress, Lavender, Juniper, Helichrysum, and other essential oils. Peru Balsam is non-toxic, and non-irritant, but the balsam (not the oil) may cause irritation on sensitive skin. Conduct a patch test using a carrier oil before applying. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
