Tagetes (Tagetes minuta) is a strong scented annual herb with green, oval shaped leaves and bright orange flowers that look like daisies.The plant is native to South America and Mexico, and grows wild in Africa, Europe, and North America and Asia. The oil is mainly produced in South Africa, France, Egypt, and Argentina. The essential oil is steam distilled using the fresh, flowering part of the plant, producing a yellowish to dark orange liquid that smells of a citrusy nature, herbaceous, sweet, and fruity.

Closely related to the marigold,Tagetes is a potent insect repellent. With antibiotic, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties this oil can be used to help speed healing to minor wounds. It is also can help bunions and callouses, and supplies support for chest infections.

Tagates essential oil can be blended with Bergamot, Orange, Lavender, Jasmine, Lemon, Clary sage, Ylang ylang, Tangerine, Myrrh, and other oils. Tagetes can be a dermal irritant for sensitive people. Conduct a patch test using carrier oil prior to skin application. It is phototoxic: avoid exposing skin to sun for 12 to 24 hours following application. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
