Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) comes from tall evergreen trees whose branches bear clusters of small white flowers, followed by red berries. It produces a white crystalline substance; (crude camphor), from the wood of the mature trees over 50 years old. The crude is collected from the trees in the crystalline form. The essential oil is produced through steam distillation from the wood, root stumps and branches and then rectified under vacuum and filter pressure to produce three factions, known as white, brown and yellow camphor. The white camphor is the lightest fraction producing a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a sharp, pungent aroma. Native to Japan and Taiwan, it is also cultivated in India, Egypt, southern Europe and America.

It is a powerful oil and should be used with care. White Camphor may provide relief to sore and achy muscles; arthritis, aches and pains, rheumatism, colds, flu, and chills.

Camphor blends well with Allspice, Basil, Roman or German chamomile, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Nutmeg, Orange, Cajeput, Ginger, and other essential oils. Pregnant or nursing women or anyone suffering from epilepsy and asthma should not use Camphor. Too much of this oil can cause convulsions and vomiting. Can also cause skin irritations; use topically and with a carrier oil.
