The Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata) is a slender evergreen with a smooth grey trunk. Native to Indonesia, it is cultivated worldwide now, especially in the Molucca Islands, and in the Philippines. The trees have large bright green leaves standing in pairs on short stalks. At the start of the rainy season, long, rosy pink buds appear. These buds are beaten down and dried to produce the Clove oil, which is steam distilled and becomes a pale yellow liquid with a spicy-sweet odor and a fruity, fresh top note.

The clove tree has been cultivated for over 2000 years, and used medicinally in Chinese, Greek and Roman cultures for everything from breath freshening and toothaches, to assisting in pain reduction, and supporting respiratory and digestive health. It mixes well with Allspice, Basil, Black pepper, Cardamom, Coriander, Geranium, German and Roman chamomiles, Grapefruit, Lemon, Mandarin, Patchouli, Palmarosa, Rose, Sandalwood, Tea tree, and other essential oils. Clove bud oil can be used in aromatherapy, but can be a dermal irritant for people with sensitive skin. The essential oil can irritate the mucus membranes. Anyone with cancer should avoid using clove oil. Do not use if pregnant or nursing.
