Melissa (Melissa officinalis) is a sweetly scented, bushy, herb with bright green serrated leaves, and tiny white and/or pink flowers. Originally native to the Mediterranean region, it is now commonly found in North America, Europe, Middle Asia, Northern Africa, and Siberia.

It is cultivated in France, Spain, Germany and Russia. The essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the leaves and flowering tops. It produces a pale yellow liquid with a light, fresh, lemony aroma. It blends well with Geranium, Lavender, Roman and German Chamomile, Neroli, Petitgrain and many other oils. Light and refreshing, Melissa is known for calming the mind. It has a positive effect on numerous ailments like hypertension, depression, bacterial or fungal infections and nausea. Do not use when pregnant or nursing, Can cause possible skin irritation, conduct a patch test using a carrier oil prior to use.
