Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is touted as one of the most useful essential oils available, and its versatility in aromatherapy makes it a valuable addition to your collection. It is a perennial herb with green stems, serrated leaves and reddish-violet flowers. Originally Peppermint was cultivated as a hybrid known to have been propagated before the seventeenth century in England. Mints have been cultivated since ancient times in China and Japan, and evidence of mint has been found in Egyptian tombs dating as far back as 1000 B.C.

It is now cultivated throughout Europe, America and worldwide. The oil is mainly produced in France, England, America, Morocco and a few other locales. The plant parts are all used in steam distillation and produces a pale yellow or greenish liquid with a very fresh, strong, minty aroma similar to mints.

Peppermint can address a wide range of ailments including pain, inflammation, headaches, indigestion, muscle pain and stiffness, sinus infections and more, making it especially necessary for your essential oil collection.
