Sandalwood (Santalum album) is a medium sized evergreen. People have been using Sandalwood oil for over 4,000 years. It is used as a cosmetic, perfume, and embalming material throughout the East. This East Indian Sandalwood is native to the Asian tropics; India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan. India is the main producer of this oil. The trees must be over thirty years old before it is ready for the production of this exotic, fragrant oil. The tree’s wood is steam distilled to process East Indian Sandalwood essential oil. The result is a pale yellow to brownish, thick liquid with an herbaceous, woody, sweet, balsamic scent that is heavenly. This tree, like the Rosewood, is valued for its fine wood and lingering scent, and is the second most expensive wood in the world.

Sandalwood is very calming for the spirit, it helps relax, support meditation, quiets the mind, and helps with insomnia. It is often used for skin care but also works to support the respiratory system and helps fight bronchitis, coughs, and sore throat. It is a cooling oil and has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties to aid with minor aches and pain.
