Spikenard (Nardostachys jatamansi) is a tender, aromatic herb with a pungent rhizome root. It is native to the mountain regions of India, also China and Japan. The oil is distilled in the United States and Europe. It was traditionally used to anoint persons of high honor due to its healing properties and is considered to have spiritual applications for blessing and protection. Spikenard use goes back to Biblical times and was used to anoint Jesus before the Last Supper; it is also referenced in ancient Egyptian, and Roman Histories. The dried and crushed rhizome and roots are steam distilled producing a pale yellow to amber colored liquid that smells like a woody-sweet, spicy, earthy scent.

Spikenard has a deeply sedating effect when inhaled or diffused, helping to ease stress and tension, and support a good nights' rest. Its antispasmodic and digestive actions support indigestion, nausea and constipation. It is also useful in fighting allergies, inflammation and rashes. This is also an excellent oil for supporting the musculoskeletal system. It's anti-inflammatory properties help alleviate muscle and joint pain and inflammation and stress related aches and pains.
