Benzoin (Styrax Benzoin) is a large tropical tree with pale green leaves and a hard-shelled fruit. Its’ origin is Asia. The Benzoin is formed when the trunk is cut and the thick, sticky resin is exposed to air and Benzoin 4sunlight where it hardens. The crude benzoin is harvested directly from the tree and a solvent is used to extract the oil, which is brownish in color and has a sweet balsamic vanilla-like scent. Benzoin oil has been used for thousands of years in the east as a medicine and incense. For ease of use and dispensing, it is recommended the bottle be placed in hot water until it resumes a liquid state. Benzoin blends well with Juniper, Neroli, Lemon, Copaiba, Jasmine, Myrrh (another thick resinous oil), Coriander, Sandalwood, and many Spice oils. Benzoin can have a sedative effect, and can cause skin sensitization; conduct a patch test on sensitive skin before using. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
