Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) is a tall prerennial, scented grass, with a straight stem, long narrow leaves, and has a massive, underground root system. It is native to south India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It is also cultivated, in the Philippines, Japan, West Africa, South America, and Reunion. The oil is produced in Java, Haiti, and Reunion; some is distilled in Europe and America. The abundant root system has been used in the East to make fine perfumes since antiquity. It is grown in India to protect against soil erosion during the rainy season. It is known as the “Oil of Tranquility”, in India and Sri Lanka. The roots and rootlets are washed, chopped, dried and soaked, then steam distilled to produce a dark brown or amber colored viscous oil with a deep, earthy and herbaceous scent with a sweet undertone.

Vetiver is a grounding oil. It helps bring about deep relaxation and helps soothe mind, body, and spirit. It is also helpful in reducing inflammation and helping increase circulation to muscles and joints. Vetiver essential oil helps fight fungal activity and helps cool, and restore damaged and wounded skin.
