Wintergreen (Gaultheria fragantissima) is a small, aromatic, evergreen herb with slender stems, which sprout erect twigs, leathery leaves and white flowers which are followed by red berries. It is native to North America, and Canada. The oil is produced in the United States. Wintergreen grows up to 6 inches and has deep-green leathery leaves that sprout small white flowers that develop into scarlet berries. The leaves which produces the essential oil are macerated in water, then steam distilled (the oil does not occur crudely in the plant, but can only be produced during the decomposition process that occurs in warm water). It produces a pale yellow to pinkish liquid with a sweet-woody, fruity scent.

This essential oil is incredibly potent, yet of the more effective essential oils at helping to relieve pain and inflammation. Use this oil with caution, small amounts, and for shorter periods of time ( 3 to 4 days). It has also been used to support healthy lung function and help ease chronic mucous discharge, ease the pain of sciatica, and symptoms of neuralgia.

Wintergreen blends well with oregano, Thyme, Peppermint, Ylang ylang, Bergamot, Basil, Geranium, Marjoram, Spearmint, White fir, and Cypress.

Wintergreen essential oil can be toxic, and irritant and sensitizing. It is only recommended for use by certified aromatherapists, and/or herbalists who know how to use this oil safely. Not recommended for anyone with a history of seizures or aspirin sensitivities. overuse can lead to sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children, this oil smells very good and could attract children. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
