Valerian essential oil is derived from a perennial herb with short thick, greyish roots, largely showing above the ground, which have a strong odor. The plant grows pretty pinkish white flowers, but it's the roots that are responsible for the extraordinarily relaxing properties that valerian is known for.

Valerian has been highly esteemed since medieval times.  It was termed “all heal”.  It is excellent for soothing a variety of ailments, especially nervous tension or restlessness, insomnia, hysteria, migraine, rheumatism, backaches and pain.  Although it works wonders, it possesses an intensely strong woody, musky and unusual aroma that can be off-putting to some. While it may not smell very pleasant, many say the benefits of using this oil are greater. Valerian oil is extracted through steam distillation of the rhizomes producing medium – thick oil that is golden in color. It mixes well with geranium, cinnamon, blood orange, vetiver, tea tree, lavnde4r, ylang ylang and other floral and spice oils.
