German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is an earthy sweet smelling herb that comes from France, Hungary, Eastern Europe, and Egypt. It has been naturalized in North America and Australia. Its also known as blue chamomile because the oil produced from this plant is deep blue in color. The plant is an annual, strongly fragrant herb with erect branching stems, feathery leaves and daisy-like flowers. The essential oil is steam distilled from the flower heads producing a viscous liquid with a floral, herbaceous, sweet and spicy aroma. It has been used to support a variety of ailments including circulation and muscles, digestive conditions, skin care, genito-urinary concerns,but is most known for its ability to soothe and calm frazzled nerves. Closely related to Roman chamomile, the two oils share similar characteristics; except German chamomile has been characterized to have higher anti-inflammatory properties.

It blends well with Bergamot, Clary sage, Clove, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Geranium, Helichrysum, Melissa, Myrrh, Tea tree, Palmarosa, Patchouli, and a host of other oils. It is non-toxic, non-Irritant, can cause dermatitis in some individuals. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
