The Birch (Betula lenta) is an extremely tall tree averaging about 80 feet high with bright green leaves and a dark reddish brown bark which is very aromatic. To process the essential oils, the bark is broken into patches or strips and soaked (macerated) in warm water to soften, then steam distilled. The result is a thin, colorless to pale yellow oil with a sweet, woody smell like wintergreen.
Sweet birch should not be diffused or used for aromatherapy as Methyl salicylate (the major constituent of this oil) is very harmful in concentration. Sweet birch blends well with Rosemary, Sandalwood, Jasmine, Lemon, Orange, Bergamot, Grapefruit, and other essential oils. it Use only with a carrier oil. Avoid use while pregnant or nursing. Not recommended for use by non -professional users. Avoid use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid if on blood thinners, are about to have surgery, have bleeding disorders, have salicylate deficiency, seizure disorder or ADD/ADHD.
