Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is one of the most popular, and widely used, of the essential oils. It has a long history of use from the Australian aboriginal people. The name comes from its usage as an herbal tea, which was prepared from the leaves. It is a small tree with needle-like leaves, with heads of yellow or purplish flowers. Native to Australia, the Melaleuca alternifolia is not produced outside of Australia, particularly in New South Wales. The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs, resulting in a thin, pale yellow-green mobile liquid with a warm, fresh, camphorous aroma.

This oil is active against all three varieties of infectious organisms: Viruses, Bacteria, and Fungi. It provides powerful immuno-stimulant support. Tea Tree can be used to help with skin care issues like acne, athlete's foot, rashes, insect bites and wounds. Tea Tree oil blends well with Bergamot, Black pepper, Clary sage, Cypress, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Nutmeg, Peppermint, Ravensara, Lemon, Helichrysum, Lavender, Myrrh, Helichrysum, Ylang ylang, and a host of others. Tea tree is non-toxic and non-irritant, but can be a dermal irritant for people with sensitive skin. Conduct a patch test using a carrier oil prior to application on the skin.
