Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) is a small tree with abundant leaves that produce white and pink flowers. It produces a natural oleoresin which is obtained by slashing the bark and allowing the resin to bleed out and harden into amber or brown lumps. The tree is native to the Red Sea region and grows throughout northeast Africa. The gum is mainly produced in Somalia, Ethiopia, China and distilled in Europe and India.

The resins have been traded, and used for over 5,000 years in religious, cultural and medicinal ways. Frankincense has been used medicinally for a wide range of conditions and can be supportive of the musculoskeletal system, in meditation, for respiratory and skin conditions, as well as digestive and nervous disorders. This oil is prized in Aromatherapy. Therapeutic properties include analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immune building.
The oil is steam distilled from the resins producing a pale yellow mobile liquid with a woody, musky, sweet-balsamic aroma. It blends well with Bergamot, Black pepper, Tangerine, Sandalwood, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Cedarwood, Ginger, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lavender, Pine, Vetiver, , Basil, Ylang ylang and a host of other oils. Frankincense is non-toxic, non-sensitizing and non-irritant.
