Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is derived from small trees with sturdy knotted branches, aromatic leaves and small white flowers. The commiphora species is native to north east Africa and south west Asia, particularly the Red Sea regions of Somalia, Ethiopia and Yemen. Myrrh use has been recorded back for thousands of years in eastern and western medicines. It was used for embalming Egyptian royalty; given as a gift to the baby Jesus in the Bible, and used in perfumes and cosmetics. The Myrrh tree produces an oleoresin (gum), a pale yellow liquid which hardens into reddish-brown tears. The Myrrh resin is processed through steam distillation; producing an essential oil that is thick, pale yellow to amber in color and has a warm, rich, spicy-sweet, woody and smoky aroma.

It is used worldwide for a variety of conditions: arthritis, menstrual problems, sore throats, weak gums and teeth and skin care. Myrrh blends well with Sandalwood, Frankincense, Bergamot, Clove, Cypress, Ylang ylang, Vetiver, Tea tree, Rosemary, Lavender, Lemon, Juniper, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Geranium, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Rose, Tangerine, and a host of other oils. It is non-irritant, and non-sensitizing. Do not use in high concentrations. Do not use when pregnant or nursing.
